Too Good to be True

Surfing at Dana Point, Orange County, CA

Swimming in the Pacific Ocean so soon after climbing in Glacier National Park and hiking in the desert punctuated how incredible this trip has been. Our hope had been that we would deepen our appreciation of nature and that the open-endedness of the trip would teach us to live more in the moment, avail ourselves to serendipity, and be less beholden to daily routines. When we booked one-way airline tickets from Charlotte, North Carolina to Whitefish, Montana, we honestly did not know when or how this trip would end.

Our week in Balboa Bay, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point exceeded our expectations. Perfect weather every day highlighted by a whale watching voyage for Cameron’s birthday. As we drove up and down the palm-lined coast and the kids talked about missing their friends, we decided to end the adventure on a high note. But before we ended it, there was one more stop.

A great friend had offered up his family’s authentic mid-century modern abode in Palm Springs. The laid-back desert vibe resonated with me. So we settled down in Palm Springs for a couple days, booked flights from Palm Springs to Charlotte for Clary and the kids, and began talking about what would come next.

And how did I get home? Well, after spending nearly every moment of the last three months with my beloved wife and kids, I pointed our Wrangler East….

“Morning on the outskirts of town
Sitting in the traffic alone
You don’t know what it means to be free
It was too good to be true”
-Tom Petty, Too Good to be True

Thank you, family and friends, for following along. See you on our next adventure!

  1. Wow wow wow. So very glad you could explore with your family during this Pandemic. The kids will remember this all their lives. Wondering where you will go next???
